ArroyoAt the Grand Salon of New York’s JW Marriott Essex House on November 13, 2017, Metropolitan Opera Singers James Morris and Ailyn Pérez, and Tony Award winning actors Chita Rivera and Tommy Tune, were honored, as patrons and guests gathered together to celebrate The Martina Arroyo Foundation’s Prelude to Performance, a six-week intensive training program for young singers to prepare for the complete performance of an operatic role.  This evening marked the 13th Annual celebration of its kind with a live auction, dinner, and culminating performance from the participating young artists.

Martina Arroyo herself is an award winning soprano and teacher, perhaps best known for her thriving career as a leading lady with the Metropolitan Opera.  Having always believed strongly that successful performance required skills beyond vocal proficiency, such as character study, lyrical interpretation, and knowing the historical framework of a piece, she had initially taught such essential performance skills as a professor of music at Indiana University.  The success of this endeavor, along with her personal recognition of the intense competition young talents face in this industry, inspired the birth of her foundation in June 2003.

To date, hundred of students have been coached well beyond the scope of achieving attractive vocals within the evening’s celebrated “Prelude to Performance” program.  An initiative that is funded largely by the annual Gala, some of Opera’s current finest talents have benefitted from this unique opportunity to be mentored by industry professionals.
